Email marketing is an integral part of our lives – both for work and personal use – to communicate from the comfort of our home or office, from our computer or cell phone – to reach anyone, anywhere for free. Whether you’re looking to get in touch with your colleagues for project updates, or need to send a client a document to help close a deal, there is no denying the power and ease of sending an email.
Here are 5 tips you can use when developing your subject line to increase the chances of your email being opened.
1. Keep it short
With 85% of users using their cell phones to access email, it’s critical to keep your subject line short enough to be read on mobile. If it’s too long, you run the risk of important text being cut off, causing your recipient to skip over your email.
2. Ask a question
Using a question in your subject line is a great way to get your recipient thinking about what your email is going to say and offer. When your question hits close to home, your audience will feel like the message was personalized just for them and will build an emotional connection, which will compel them to open the email and keep reading.
3. Use a few emojis
Within an email, you can add a header image, colors from your brand, buttons that pop, and so much more to showcase your brand’s personality. How do you create a little flare to your subject line when it’s text-based? Add a few emojis to liven up your copy and show your personality!
4. Personalize the message
Receiving an email that includes your name or context about your specific job title and/or hobbies in the subject line makes the content feel relevant – like the message and journey were developed specifically for you; not just a mass email marketing effort flooding your inbox.

5. Pique their curiosity
Have you ever said something that made everyone around you look and wonder with curiosity: who said that… what did they mean… etc.? That’s the power your subject line should have! Whether you use a question (as mentioned previously), an intriguing statement, or a statistic, your subject line should leave no other option than to open.
