When reflecting on what Valentine’s Day means to us, we realized marketing and dating have a lot in common. “What could they possibly have in common”, you ask? People tend to make pretty similar mistakes time and time again for each respectively, and then wonder why they find themselves in with failing campaigns or storing more ‘emergency ice cream’ in their freezer than they would care to admit. Not that we would know anything about the ice cream…
You’re not investing in the ways you should
The saying is, you catch more flies with honey than vinegar…and we’re guessing you’ll catch more dates with flowers. So why do you keep paying for vinegar content for your business when it comes to content marketing? Knowing your audience and creating custom content that targets them and meets their needs specifically makes the world of a difference for your audience. If you’re going to spend the time, energy, and money on a relationship or piece of content, you want to make sure it makes the most sense to help you find your perfect match!
You’re looking in the wrong places
They say love knows no limits, but there are definitely some limits. So many marketers spend a great deal of time and money trying to get attention and engagement on their favorite platforms…instead of meeting their customers where they’re already interacting and engaging most. Figuring out your audience’s favorite buying habits and online patterns before marketing or sharing your content with them will really change the game when it comes to getting what you want. After all, you can’t get what you’ve never had by not trying anything new!
You’re casting too wide of a net
There are so many fish in the sea, but in all honesty, most of them aren’t the right fit for you in both love and marketing. That’s why it’s so important to profile not only the audience you’re targeting, but the types of people and businesses that you’re working with in order to maximize your experiences. Nobody is expecting you to ride off into the sunset when it’s not the right fit, so make sure you’re appropriately targeting who you want to talk to and work with.
You just can’t agree on things
A lot like relationships, communication is the key to both short and long term success, and coming together for marketing and sales alignment to create a mutual understanding when it comes to messaging, benefits, and the best ways to market a product comes down to marketing and sales alignment as one team. No more, “that’s not my job” or “I don’t know, ask them”. It’s time to come together as a unified and collaborative unit!
Only relying on in-person encounters
We live in a digital world and the odds of you bumping into your one true love on the streets is very slim. That’s why so many people have taken to dating apps and websites! Similarly, businesses need to adopt this tech-savvy market and start integrating more strategic digital sales tactics and techniques into their marketing efforts. So instead of just relying strictly on events for your main focus of the year, make sure you’re taking full advantage of the digital age to nurture your audience even when you can’t actually see them. Always be marketing!
I think we can all agree that marketing and dating have more in common than we could have ever imagined! We hope you celebrate this Valentine’s Day by strengthing your relationships with these helpful tips.
